The Batak indigenous people are mainly Christian; a mixture of Protestant, Methodist and Catholic. They are the most important Christian community living within the world’s biggest Muslim country, Indonesia. Despite conflicts that take place between peoples of different religions in the rest of the world, and indeed violence on other Indonesian islands, the Batak Christians live in peaceful co-existence with their Muslim neighbours. The Christian Batak express their traditional culture through rituals and ceremonies exactly like their Muslim Batak brethren. They abide by the Muslim laws of their country and their children are required by law to learn the Koran alongside Muslim students at school.
